Armleder, Willi Baumeister, Hicham Berrada, Mbali Dhlamini, Haris Epaminonda, Isabell Heimerdinger, Dayanita Singh, Guy Tillim, Franz Erhard Walther, uvm.  painting–drawing  sculpture–installation  photography  audio–video art

The anniversary exhibition ›Friendship. Nature. Culture. 44 Years of the Daimler Art Collection‹ looks back on the development of an internationally renowned corporate collection. From over 3,000 artworks in the collection, founded in 1977, about 100 works by ca. 70 artists have been selected. Relating, in a broad sense, to contemporary phenomena in the context of friendship, nature and culture, the artistic works form networks and explore the interplay between art and human coexistence.

until 21.08. Die weite Ebene nach Westen, bis zum Horizont. Horst de Marées.  painting–drawing  Repro Verdun-de-Lauragais (Detail), Horst de Marées, um 1965, Tempera auf Papier, 61 x 83 cm

The ZAK -Zentrum für Aktuelle Kunst presents in the comprehensive exhibition Die weite Ebene nach Westen, bis zum Horizont the work of the painter Horst de Marées, whose biography and work development reflect in exemplary form contemporary history and formative aspects of the art of the last century.

Special event Berlin Art Week
until 21.08. Über die Zeichnung hinaus. Zeitgenössische Zeichnung in Berlin. Sonja Alhäuser, Anke Becker, Matthias Beckmann, Laura Bruce, Claudia Busching, DAG, Jorn Ebner, Myriam El Haïk, Kati Gausmann, Bjørn Hegardt, Hanna Hennenkemper, Timo Herbst, Peter Hock, Birgit Hölmer, Hannes Kater, Mark Lammert, Pia Linz, Petra Lottje, Leon Manoloudakis, Nanne Meyer, Ulrike Mohr, Tomoko Mori, Alex Müller, Bettina Munk, Kazuki Nakahara, Manfred Peckl uvm.  graphic–paper works  Repro Looking at Clouds, 2021, Tusche auf Papier

The exhibition “Über die Zeichnung hinaus” shows the abundance of current drawing positions in Berlin: exuberant pictorial narrative and strict reduction, figuration and abstraction, documentation and site inspection, illusion and its suspension, the microscopic and the generous, drawing as performance, in books, in space or in animation film. Whether on paper or in combination with other media, drawing goes beyond itself and crosses borders.

until 21.08. Nachbilder. Jochen Schneider.  painting–drawing  graphic–paper works  Repro Ohne Titel, Jochen Schneider, 2021, Graphit auf Papier, 29,7 x 21 cm

We perceive Nachbilder with closed eyes, as memories, when the original light stimulus of the concrete pre-image has already faded away. It is similar with the works of Jochen Schneider – what we have seen resonates and provides the impetus for his drawings and then for images within us that now tell their own, new story – without providing final answers.

until 21.08. Fragmente des Krieges. Bilder aus der Ukraine. Johanna-Maria Fritz, Helena Lea Manhartsberger, Laila Sieber.  photography  Repro aus der Serie "Im Garten ein Grab", Johanna-Maria Fritz/Ostkreuz

The group exhibition "Fragments of War – Pictures from Ukraine" shows the photographs by OSTKREUZ photographer Johanna-Maria Fritz (with the series "In the Garden a Grave") and by the two photographers Helena Lea Manhartsberger and Laila Sieber (with the series "Where you can hear the silence"). All three made their way to Ukraine at the beginning of the war. They wanted to be there themselves and capture the incomprehensible in pictures: a war of aggression in Europe, an attack on democracy.

until 21.08. Summer of Possibilities. Group exhibition curated by Alteronce Gumby. Anthony Akinbola, Ryan Cosbert, Louis Cameron, Keltie Ferris, Tomashi Jackson, Stephanie Lüning, Chris Martin, Tariku Shiferaw, Sylvia Snowden, Joan Snyder, David Reed.  painting–drawing  graphic–paper works  sculpture–installation  glass–light–textile art  Repro TAZ #67, Chris Martin, 2021, Acrylic, oil, and glitter on canvas , 102.9 × 76.2 cm / 40 1/2 × 30 in, Photo: Courtesy of the Artist and Anton Kern Gallery

Summer of Possibilities is an homage to that one summer in August when artists did not know what to. expect. It joins emerging and established artists who understand the work of art-making and the importance of those historical breaks that exist in their work. But it is also a statement about the work of art-making now. The practice of working and the possible opportunities that come with it. Regardless of how that work manifests, each piece is a collection of moments that mesh and intertwine.

until 21.08. Where Within. Zean Cabangis, JC Jacinto.  painting–drawing  graphic–paper works  Miscellaneous  Repro Tropical Window I, Zean Cabangis, 2022, Acrylic and emulsion transfer on canvas, 153 × 183.1 cm / 60 1/4 × 72 1/8 in

In Where Within the Filipino artists JC Jacinto and Zean Cabangis meditate on the ebb and flow relationship between a person and a place. The acts of observing, discovering, documenting and constructing their surroundings become an act of blurring the lines between space and being. The immersion in a place becomes an immersion of thought, and within these thoughts, new places are formed.

until 21.08. Forcierte Relikte. Kuratiert von Salve Berlin.  painting–drawing  graphic–paper works  sculpture–installation  Miscellaneous  Repro Forcierte Relikte, Salve Berlin, 2022

Relic: remnant from a past time, or remnant from a previous of a former state, indicates being left behind, abandoned (Latin: rēlinquere). The curated works show traces of something greater or something that has disappeared. In doing so, the art production imitates, on the one hand, traces of past epochs. On the material plays an essential role. As a medium used are used: quotes, collage, installation, sculpture, drawing, film, textile works.

until 22.08. Tectonic Tender. Nina Canell.  sculpture–installation  Repro Muscle Memory (7 Tonnes), Nina Canell, 2022, Hardscaping material from marine molluscs, Photo: Foto: © Robin Watkins

Nina Canell’s (* 1979) artistic practice does not revolve around the finished artwork; instead, it foregrounds process, synergy and entanglement. For the Berlinische Galerie, she has conceived an experiential installation that considers the material vitality of calcite. Literally crumbling under our own weight, seven tonnes of shells speak up from the ground, causing a sensation remote from that of walking on a polished gallery floor.

18.08. – 22.08. The exhibition focuses on the Hamburg Secession, the only group of classical modern artists in the city on the Elbe. Founded in 1919, it saw itself as a platform for like-minded people and united artists from the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture and literature. It produced strong artistic personalities who enriched the cultural life of the Hanseatic city with their diverse independent contributions.

Once, Rebecca Horn placed her Peacock Machine inside a classicist temple on an island in a park. The artist created this large mechanical sculpture in 1982 for documenta 7 in Kassel. For the 40th anniversary, the artwork will be on display in the Corner Space of Galerie Thomas Schulte.

Galerie Thomas Schulte is pleased to present the second exhibition of sculptures and works on paper by Fred Sandback. Interactive and transparent as they are, his sculptures, which are made of yarn stretched between two fixed points, are basically outlines that develop their presence in space and can be physically experienced – as "a drawing that is habitable”, as Sandback once said.

We are showing crypto art by five artists.

Ali Eckert, Carla Chan, Ju Schnee, Lilly Grote, Tatumm

Each of the artists not only represents their own understanding of art, but also a different approach to the production of NFTs. Only one thing unites them: the dissolution of boundaries and the look at a new medium.

until 27.08. Layers. Eric Mangen, Artjom Chepovetskyy.  painting–drawing  graphic–paper works  Repro Right: Artjom Chepovetskyy, 2 (12), 2021, mixed media on chiffon, 50 x 40 cm (detail), Left: Eric Mangen, Vernissage II, 2021, acrylic on torn advertising posters, 80 x 120 cm (detail)

In the powerful urbanity of Eric Mangen's (*1983 in Luxemburg) poster works as well as in the delicate materiality of Artjom Chepovetskyy's (*1984 in Odessa) works lurk fundamental questions about painting and an exploration of the limits of pictorial genesis. Layer by layer, this painterly dialogue makes it possible to dive through various degrees of abstraction into individually experienceable pictorial spaces....

Thomas Florschuetz, born in Zwickau in 1957, is considered to be one of the most important German representatives of contemporary photography. The fascination of photography lies in the complexity of the medium for the artist – which extends beyond the purely illustrative, documentary function. Florschuetz argues that the surrounding reality must be questioned in order to arrive at a more complex image.

Hubertus Reichert is picking up the trail he started in 2021 with his series on Dante Alighieri's Commedia. In his new works he wanders through the three realms that Dante traveled through on his journey. In his large paintings he focuses on nature, Dante’s landscapes, colors and materials that keep appearing. One does not face Reichert's new works as a viewer. He makes us feel like stepping into carpets, passing the landscape and being inside.

Deborah Poynton’s sometimes monumental canvases are painted in a virtuoso realistic technique that reveals the smallest details. These are works that offer a reflective visual experience that forces one to pause and resists the fleeting flood of images in digital media. The overwhelming visual richness of her pictorial worlds, in which the gaze can wander almost endlessly, shows a constructed reality, combined from different set pieces.

As in the "Innocent" exhibition, Waller, with her latest series of works entitled "Victims", once again takes a hard look at various forms of worldwide violence against children, the weakest and most defenseless members of our society. In view of the seriousness of the topic, the artist deliberately dispenses with the ironic hyperbole and black humor, which are so often a hallmark of her works.

After two epically long pandemic years, we long for a summer of new freedoms and nights of revelry. But can we break out of the rehearsed crisis mode, of loneliness and emptiness, and surrender again to life, to sensuality that has become uncanny? Or do we have to think of the next morning and the busyness and distances of the day even in the liberating night? Artists of the gallery seek, find and give inspiration. Extended until 24 September 2022.

How do they centre themselves again? And how do they regain their grounding in what may be a new home? https://www.fkwbh.de/ausstellung/home-again

Light has been Chen Ruo Bing’s subject right from the start. As early as 2005, he called an exhibition “Into the Light”. Over the years, he has increasingly dissolved the material aspect in his paintings. Concrete shapes, opaque colours have become more and more intangible. With a brush, paint, and canvas, he gets ever closer to embodying light.

In August 2020, the two artist friends begin a photographic dialogue with images from their archives. In doing so, they proceed intuitively. The guiding idea is a search for images that immediately touch for different reasons. These finds from the past experience a new context in the exhibition, which opens up spaces for spontaneous associations, contradictory feelings and previously untold stories.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with a text by Holger Tegtmeyer.

Against the backdrop of the fear of alienation as well as exclusion and its consequences, the exhibition negotiates the ambivalent concept of homeland in a "volatile modernity" (Zygmunt Bauman) with its experiences of globalization and fluid power structures. The appropriation of the emotionally connoted narrative of homeland by right-wing voices in the sense of a folk ideology is countered by the romanticization of homeland fantasies in commercial folklore.

Between 1891 and 1914, more than a million mostly Jewish migrants from Eastern Europe had to pass through the emigrant train station between Berlin and Spandau. Before they were allowed to emigrate via the North Sea ports to the USA and other countries, their papers, finances and state of health were checked here.

The exhibition explores questions that are just as pressing today as they were over a hundred years ago.
