In our current exhibition of Bettina Krieg’s work, we are showing a group of new mostly large-scale drawings created over the past two years. Bettina’s line drawings evoke many associations. One can think of extremely enlarged hair bundles or waves. In any case, they are about movement and rhythm.

The paintings by Zoran Minić, the photographs by Maria Mölko, and the drawings by David Connearn are both. Unlike the previous exhibition on landscape, ‘Landschaft’, ‘Stadt Land Fluss’ does not present unconnected individual positions; rather, a contrast is built up that is resolved in the connection.

Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are delighted to announce Nancy Holt’s (1938–2014) first solo exhibition at the Berlin gallery. Mirrors of Light presents the room-scale installation with the same title, a work from 1973/74 that is crucial to understanding Holt’s notion of perceptual experience. Holt’s practice navigates the complexities of light as artistic medium, physical reality, and aesthetic concept.

"KioskShop berlin (KSb)" by H. N. Semjon has shaped the face of central Berlin for 11 years from 2000 to 2011. The white shop as a minimalist work of art that connects the art and retail world. The strangely remote "Product Sculptures" from everyday goods, with a painterly structured white beeswax coat, seem to have stopped time. Nicolas Berggruen's Holding kills him. Michael Schuster‘s starting point: the photographically produced image. This is fellowed by reduction processes of the samples and the use of leaves to suggest the past release. These solve the photographs from their original context. Thus subjectivity and intimacy disappear. The result is an image: universal, independent and new – freed from the attempt to fabricate the present and reality.

Via a series of fragmentary insights into this incubator of paradoxes and dissonances, he reflects on conflicting narratives of redemption.

The photo exhibition #SpiritOfStBerlin presents works by street photographer and publicist Martin A. Völker. His Berlin images surprise with unusual insights and vistas, between the melancholy of everyday life and the departure into the dreamlike. Before the pandemic, city documents in stylish black and white dominate his work, transforming into abstract and colourful city icons during the pandemic. Berlin cool and hot at the same time.

28.01. – 19.03. Ausgewählte Arbeiten aus der Albertina-Ausstellung. Michela Ghisetti.  painting–drawing  graphic–paper works  Repro Moana 6/20, Michela Ghisetti, 2020, Acryl auf Aquarellpapier, 55,5 x 57 cm, Photo: Michela Ghisetti

Michela Ghisetti’s work ranges between the poles of abstract and figurative art. In her works, biographical and emotional elements merge with issues of philosophy and art theory. This gives rise to conceptually rigid, humorous and intuitive groups of works in which the artist constantly tries out new content and a wide variety of materials, challenging their fundamental principles. – Antonia Hoerschelmann

29.01. – 19.03. Szenerien. erlebt. erdacht. erträumt. Wilfried Reiff, Rolf Curt, Fritz Kuhr.  painting–drawing  graphic–paper works

The exhibition features paintings, woodcuts, etchings and collages by the painters and graphic artists Wilfried Reiff, Fritz Kuhr and Rolf Curt. As precise observers of their surroundings, these and other artists tell multi-layered and allusive stories and anecdotes in their works. They lead the viewer into familiar or mysterious worlds, sensitively criticise and create new references to reality.

Regularly employing light, reflection and colors as their primary materials, his wall works, sculptures and site-conditional installations involve a careful balance of presence and absence that use simple, understated means to generate sophisticated visual and spatial effects.

Color, form, light and shadow – the images in Jessica Backhaus’ series “Cut Outs” are created using the basic elements of photography. Cut out transparent papers are arranged on a paper backdrop, exposed to the sun and photographed. The papers react to the intense heat, deform, rise, contract, cast shadows. Jessica Backhaus becomes the documentarist of a visual experiment, a poetic choreography of intense colors in the sunlight.

27.01. – 27.03. Nicht-Orte. Annabell Häfner.  painting–drawing  Repro Transit 24, Annabell Häfner, 2021

In her painterly series "Nicht-Orte", Annabell Häfner deals with transit spaces of the modern world and the sensations that unfold there. Waiting rooms, airport halls and hotel rooms, for example, are characterised above all by their emptiness and lack of traces. In this anonymity, the self is thrown back on itself, one's own feelings are perceived more intensely.

The work of Alicja Kwade (*1979) is inspired by scientific, philosophical and social questions. By exploring models and constructs that form our perception of time, space and matter, her large-scale installations question the possibilities of objective and subjective knowledge.

The exhibition brings together new, space-related works by the Berlin artists Eva Berendes, Heike Gallmeier and Gloria Zein. They deal with capacities of pictorial setting under the aspect of being temporary, fragile and ephemeral. The artists juxtapose the architectural complex of ideas of political and material permanence of the Citadel with concepts of provisional lightness, changeability and movement.

The four female painters in the exhibition “Figure. No Figure. X.” position themselves in the border area between figuration, structure, systematics and colour field. Their works unfold a field of contemporary painting that is as contrasting as it is rich in relationships and that is both classical and experimental.

The exhibition “Train Lines” is dedicated to the microcosm of “public transport” from the perspective of an artist who has been working as a driver for the Leipzig tram since 2014 and for the Berlin underground since 2021. This gives rise to drawn systems of notation of a social, political and psychological nature that provide a very concrete insight into the world of thought. Filtering and abstracting mirrors of our cities over a longer period of time and thus an artistic social atlas.
