Denkharmonist. André Thomkins (1930–1985). painting–drawinggraphic–paper works Repro Transport de Chine à Papfouta, André Thomkins, 1955, Federzeichnung, Photo: Foto: Kunsthandel Wolfgang Werner
The swiss artist André Thomkins (1930–1985) counts among the most interesting artistic positions of the postwar era. Living in Germany since 1952, he creates - blessed with an exuberant inventiveness - an oeuvre that in its diversity resists art-historical classification. We open an insight to this multi-faceted work presenting – besides oil-paintings, watercolours and drawings – the so-called Lackskins, Rollagen and Scharniere as well as rapport patterns and paraphrases.

Traurige Mangroven und das Plastik im Meer. Ein Gespräch mit Petra Beck und Susanne Kriemann, Miscellaneous
Photo and mystery - this was the theme developed by the students of the 48th Elementary School in Berlin-Pankow for their contribution to the exhibition Takeover. For this they chose Susanne Kriemann's series Mngrv (2018-2020). Today, artist Susanne Kriemann and ethnographer Petra Beck will talk to young and old visitors about the changing relationship to the sea along children's books, all of which have a plastic duck lost in the sea as their main character.

Author and journalist Jörg-Uwe Albig will discuss the theses of his new book with Mladen Gladic on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 7 p.m.
In current debates about climate policy, refugees to Corona, a horror image is regularly conjured up: the specter of moralism. We encounter morality in everyday life, in politics, in society. But morality is often just ranted about. In his new book, Jörg-Uwe Albig counters this in a biting, rousing and cleverly argued way.
With this exhibition, Kang Contemporary showcases the relationships between mental and physical spaces. Focusing on intrusions and intersections, therefore, denying any isolation between Art, Space and People complicates these entities and troubles clarity of interpretation. At the same time, it opens the possibility of discovering a plethora of connections and correlations which are tangent to everyday life.

40 years after the Zeitgeist exhibition of 1982 with its focus on painting, especially "Heftige Malerei" (ferocious painting), held at the Martin-Gropius-Bau—which at the time was located right next to the Berlin Wall and had only just been provisionally renovated—the exhibition at the Galerie Deschler compellingly recalls Berlin's vibrant art scene of the 1980s.

Scan is the first exhibition in Germany of works by Deni Horvatić, an artist born and living in Croatia in 1991. In his scan-like photographs, he removes the distance between himself and the portrayed by choosing a particular point of view: Taken from below, the images take as much as they give, for they deny the viewer a glimpse of the part of the body we most immediately associate with identity - the face.

For 35 years, Stephan Hann has been concerned with the demise and survival of materials. Long before the appreciative view of people and materials had even reached the consciousness of many. And yet we are still faced with the question of how a new appreciation, a desire, a craving for something seen as worthless can arise.

"Bright Red" brings together new works by Portuguese artist José Pedro Cortes. The title alludes to the visual deficiency that each man has, a mild color blindness that shifts the color red (or what is known as red) to green, changing the reading of the color spectrum. His photographs function as a map of visual possibilities. Cortes says: "My images reflect our time of constant doubt."

Yann Freichel's representational paintings are created in a lengthy process in which historical events and his own present experience are combined associatively.

With Kids Curate_Takeover. A project by the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor and the Gropius Bau, Berlin primary school pupils realise their own exhibition on-site at the Gropius Bau. The exhibition explores how to see and understand the world through children’s eyes, through such sensory themes as movement and shadows; the exhibition as a game; interactions between light and water; and the interplay of sound and nature.
With the exhibition many titles, galerie probst is presenting this summer a group show in which seven young artists, each with an individual focus and form of expression, enter into dialogue for the first time. On display are figurative, abstract and monochrome works from the genres of painting, mixed media and sculpture. As the title suggests, there is not one overarching theme, but many, or at least seven, resulting from the sum of the artistic positions.

Galerie Thomas Schulte is pleased to present the second exhibition of sculptures and works on paper by Fred Sandback. Interactive and transparent as they are, his sculptures, which are made of yarn stretched between two fixed points, are basically outlines that develop their presence in space and can be physically experienced – as "a drawing that is habitable”, as Sandback once said.
After two epically long pandemic years, we long for a summer of new freedoms and nights of revelry. But can we break out of the rehearsed crisis mode, of loneliness and emptiness, and surrender again to life, to sensuality that has become uncanny? Or do we have to think of the next morning and the busyness and distances of the day even in the liberating night? Artists of the gallery seek, find and give inspiration.

The exhibition “Über die Zeichnung hinaus” shows the abundance of current drawing positions in Berlin: exuberant pictorial narrative and strict reduction, figuration and abstraction, documentation and site inspection, illusion and its suspension, the microscopic and the generous, drawing as performance, in books, in space or in animation film. Whether on paper or in combination with other media, drawing goes beyond itself and crosses borders.
We perceive Nachbilder with closed eyes, as memories, when the original light stimulus of the concrete pre-image has already faded away. It is similar with the works of Jochen Schneider – what we have seen resonates and provides the impetus for his drawings and then for images within us that now tell their own, new story – without providing final answers.

Fragmente des Krieges. Bilder aus der Ukraine. Johanna-Maria Fritz, Helena Lea Manhartsberger, Laila Sieber. photography Repro aus der Serie "Im Garten ein Grab", Johanna-Maria Fritz/Ostkreuz
The group exhibition "Fragments of War – Pictures from Ukraine" shows the photographs by OSTKREUZ photographer Johanna-Maria Fritz (with the series "In the Garden a Grave") and by the two photographers Helena Lea Manhartsberger and Laila Sieber (with the series "Where you can hear the silence"). All three made their way to Ukraine at the beginning of the war. They wanted to be there themselves and capture the incomprehensible in pictures: a war of aggression in Europe, an attack on democracy.
Relic: remnant from a past time, or remnant from a previous of a former state, indicates being left behind, abandoned (Latin: rēlinquere). The curated works show traces of something greater or something that has disappeared. In doing so, the art production imitates, on the one hand, traces of past epochs. On the material plays an essential role. As a medium used are used: quotes, collage, installation, sculpture, drawing, film, textile works.

Nina Canell’s artistic practice deals with process, transformation and material agency. It does not revolve around the finished artwork, instead foregrounding synergy, entanglement and unpredictability. Her work is recognised for its experimental nature and its questioning of matter as inert, dead or instrumentalised. It is the overlapping trajectories of energetics, material vitalities and spatio-durational convergences that bring the work into existence.

Thomas Florschuetz, born in Zwickau in 1957, is considered to be one of the most important German representatives of contemporary photography. The fascination of photography lies in the complexity of the medium for the artist – which extends beyond the purely illustrative, documentary function. Florschuetz argues that the surrounding reality must be questioned in order to arrive at a more complex image.

Hubertus Reichert is picking up the trail he started in 2021 with his series on Dante Alighieri's Commedia. In his new works he wanders through the three realms that Dante traveled through on his journey. In his large paintings he focuses on nature, Dante’s landscapes, colors and materials that keep appearing. One does not face Reichert's new works as a viewer. He makes us feel like stepping into carpets, passing the landscape and being inside.
Deborah Poynton’s sometimes monumental canvases are painted in a virtuoso realistic technique that reveals the smallest details. These are works that offer a reflective visual experience that forces one to pause and resists the fleeting flood of images in digital media. The overwhelming visual richness of her pictorial worlds, in which the gaze can wander almost endlessly, shows a constructed reality, combined from different set pieces.
Alec Soth has been chronicling aspects of American life since the late 1990s. To complete his latest series, A Pound of Pictures, the Magnum photographer travelled across the US in search of people, places, and situations to photograph with his large-format camera. A selection of his images, taken between 2018 and 2021, will be presented at the Reinbeckhallen and will prompt visitors to consider the material and immaterial weight of photographs.

The group exhibition HOME AGAIN features recent photographic and video works that explore the adaptability of a rapidly changing society. The artists set out in search of responses to the global transformation processes that are shaping our world today. How do people come together during and after crises? How do they centre themselves again? And how do they regain their grounding in what may be a new home? https://www.fkwbh.de/ausstellung/home-again

Sibylle Bergemann (1941–2010) is one of Germany’s bestknown photographers. During her Berlin-based career lasting more than four decades, she devoted great passion to an outstanding oeuvre ranging from fashion and portrait photography to literary reportage and atmospheric series. Raus. Raus? Raus! Flucht und Migration im 19. Jahrhundert über den Auswandererbahnhof Ruhleben. Miscellaneous Repro Abb. Plakat zur Ausstellung “Raus. Raus? Raus!” | Grafik: studio lindhorst-emme + hinrichs
Between 1891 and 1914, more than a million mostly Jewish migrants from Eastern Europe had to pass through the emigrant train station between Berlin and Spandau. Before they were allowed to emigrate via the North Sea ports to the USA and other countries, their papers, finances and state of health were checked here.
The exhibition explores questions that are just as pressing today as they were over a hundred years ago.
