Color is not real. Despite our extraordinary experience of color perception, all colors are mere illusions, in the sense that, although people normally think that objects appear colored because they are colored, this belief is mistaken. It is the purview of the skilled artist to harness the illusion of color to create meaningful work. Through figuration and abstraction, the artists push the possibilities of color as a tool to stimulate our imagination and challenge our visual senses.

Pierre Klossowski's art acts and oscillates like "stopped pantomimes" in the permeable border areas between reality and fiction, the factual and the ghostly apparent. In the erotic game of homage and desire, signs, meaning, essence and transformed matter are mixed up, becoming an event for the body and the senses. Last but not least, the exhibition is an opportunity to explore the serious-cheerful universe of a great spirit that is now a classic.

The main work, a lifelike nude woman in her prime sitting on her bed, looking at her crotch with a mirror, causes irritation. Especially in the context of the exhibition title and the name of the cycle of works "Mother". Is it the artist's mother or mistress? Or is she representative of the female human race, which is present to us all at least as a mother. Is this verism simply a portrait or an homage?

The story of our furless species on Planet Earth is told here in two playful installations that fill the exhibition space. Matthias Böhler (*1981 Aachen) and Christian Orendt (*1980 Sighișoara, Romania) formed their artistic duo in 2008. In this exhibition a huge monkey-like creature serves as a multiple source of “raw materials” for busy squads of workers. With J+ 1, Jarmuschek + Partner presents a special exhibition concept: Each of the artists in the gallery program not only presents a current work of their own, but also a selected guest. Each of these constellations also reveals personal details about the inviting artists and opens up individual perspectives on their artistic positions. During the Cold War, some remarkable big buildings emerged in West Berlin as new locations for science, research and the arts. After years of neglect and now technically obsolete, most of these buildings are threatened with demolition. Ever since they appeared, these architectures have often been criticised as unsightly and inefficient. That view is being challenged today by a group of academics, cultural workers and politicians who appreciate them as achievements of modern Western technology.

Großes Kino – we’re talking about cinema with a capital C, about motion pictures that leave you feeling overwhelmed or in awe. A good movie poster, too, is designed to be remembered: it captures the film’s mood, alludes to storylines, evokes feelings. The drama and narrative of a long film are condensed into a single image. The exhibition "Großes Kino" presents around 100 original movie posters from the 1900s through to the 2020s from the Kunstbibliothek’s collection of graphic design.
