Without a specific theme, UPDATE is a group exhibition in which the artists of the VBK express each year their individual positions in free artistic form. This year's exhibition gathers 79 perspectives, presenting at the same time the versatility of the concept of art and the diverse positions the members of the VBK have to offer.
As a sculptor, painter and lyricist, the Berlin artist Wolfram Beck (1930-2004) left behind an extensive and multifaceted oeuvre. In our presentation we show sculptures, assemblages, drawings and paintings. Beck was a master of aesthetic rigour and precision craftsmanship with a high sensitivity for the treatment of the respective material such as wood, steel, bronze, acrylic glass and stone. The exhibition presents sculptures, drawings and paintings from the 1960s to the 1990s.

In addition to numerous fashion photographs spanning the twentieth century, just as many paintings and drawings testify to the role of fashion as a means of expression and representation of a particular era: from the reform dress around 1900 and the Dada dandies of the 1920s to avant-garde clothing designs in contemporary art.

BORCH Editions is delighted to present Tacita Dean's offset lithograph print projects Antigone (offset), 2021, and JG (offset), 2013, in Berlin. Both projects derive from Dean's eponymous films: In Antigone (2018), Dean creates a multi-layered visual tale around the concept of blindness, rooted in the destiny of Antigone’s father/brother Oedipus, while JG (2013) is a visual interpretation of a hypothetical conversation between J.G. Ballard, Robert Smithson, and Tacita Dean.
Sofie Dawo's (1926-2010) textile works emerge predominantly from the material itself: its properties, its possibilities. To discover there is an artist whose works were long forgotten, who made an important contribution to concrete art with her experimental approach.

Since El Bocho's transition from the street to the canvas, the JRGallery has regularly exhibited his latest work in solo exhibitions. Thanks to this long-term collaboration, the gallery is lucky to be the first place to present the latest developments in his work. Look forward to new works by the by now iconic Berlin street artist.

The swiss artist André Thomkins (1930–1985) counts among the most interesting artistic positions of the postwar era. Living in Germany since 1952, he creates - blessed with an exuberant inventiveness - an oeuvre that in its diversity resists art-historical classification. We open an insight to this multi-faceted work presenting – besides oil-paintings, watercolours and drawings – the so-called Lackskins, Rollagen and Scharniere as well as rapport patterns and paraphrases.
Werner Kunkel (Magdeburg 1922 - 2017 Braunschweig), master student of Hans Kuhn at the HfbK Berlin, painted figuartively throughout his life and consciously kept away from the art establishment. He created an idiosyncratic artistic cosmos that combines factual depiction with enigmatic symbolism. On the occasion of his 100th birthday we show a selection of his paintings and drawings.

The exhibition “Über die Zeichnung hinaus” shows the abundance of current drawing positions in Berlin: exuberant pictorial narrative and strict reduction, figuration and abstraction, documentation and site inspection, illusion and its suspension, the microscopic and the generous, drawing as performance, in books, in space or in animation film. Whether on paper or in combination with other media, drawing goes beyond itself and crosses borders.
We perceive Nachbilder with closed eyes, as memories, when the original light stimulus of the concrete pre-image has already faded away. It is similar with the works of Jochen Schneider – what we have seen resonates and provides the impetus for his drawings and then for images within us that now tell their own, new story – without providing final answers.
Relic: remnant from a past time, or remnant from a previous of a former state, indicates being left behind, abandoned (Latin: rēlinquere). The curated works show traces of something greater or something that has disappeared. In doing so, the art production imitates, on the one hand, traces of past epochs. On the material plays an essential role. As a medium used are used: quotes, collage, installation, sculpture, drawing, film, textile works.

The exhibition focuses on the Hamburg Secession, the only group of classical modern artists in the city on the Elbe. Founded in 1919, it saw itself as a platform for like-minded people and united artists from the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture and literature. It produced strong artistic personalities who enriched the cultural life of the Hanseatic city with their diverse independent contributions.

In the exhibition “Self Defense Made Easy (No. 1)” we present new works on paper, prints, and videos by the Berlin-based artist Philip Crawford (1988, USA). His study of Black American Orientalism and martial arts reveals the complex relationship between the self and self-defence, addressing our contradictory desires to elude, defend against, and embrace Enlightened definitions of Man.
Ulrich Haug's works are image and object. They are plan and rectangular – thus reminiscent of the contours of paintings. At the same time, they unfold an object-like and sculptural presence in space.

The exhibition breaks new ground by devoting extensive attention to the Hungarian contribution to modern art in the German capital. Berlin was a formative influence for many Hungarian artists who, in turn, were a defining force in the art market. Restoring memories of this reciprocal cultural inspiration is the principal aim. It brings together paintings, prints, photographs and architectural drawings, deeply enriching our perception of artistic achievements from East Central Europe.
