The mining of minerals and stones has many negative connotations and is the source of much political and geographic upheaval. It is a reflection of the human impulse to exploit the land we roam; to place immediate economic and political interests above long-term environmental and communal planning. In Opencast, Cuban artist Elizabet Cerviño applies this juxtaposition to create a body of work that does not look to exploit nature but rather commune with it.

Chris Watts is an abstract painter and mixed-media artist. At the center of this artistic approach lies the creation of momentum; of disruption. The artist addresses the figurative and abstract role of the black body. The abstract paintings overturn prescribed modes of figurative representation, placing a sense of absence instead. By totally erasing the figure, the paintings emphasize the act of disappearance, emancipating notions of blackness from the Western imagination.

During the Cold War, some remarkable big buildings emerged in West Berlin as new locations for science, research and the arts. After years of neglect and now technically obsolete, most of these buildings are threatened with demolition. Ever since they appeared, these architectures have often been criticised as unsightly and inefficient. That view is being challenged today by a group of academics, cultural workers and politicians who appreciate them as achievements of modern Western technology.

Großes Kino – we’re talking about cinema with a capital C, about motion pictures that leave you feeling overwhelmed or in awe. A good movie poster, too, is designed to be remembered: it captures the film’s mood, alludes to storylines, evokes feelings. The drama and narrative of a long film are condensed into a single image. The exhibition "Großes Kino" presents around 100 original movie posters from the 1900s through to the 2020s from the Kunstbibliothek’s collection of graphic design.

Hardly any other era was so marked by division, rupture and transformation as the period after the Second World War. In light of this, the Neue Nationalgalerie has consciously chosen the title Extreme Tension for the upcoming presentation of its postwar collection. Taking the radical performance Zerreißprobe (Stress Test) by Günter Brus as its point of departure, the Neue Nationalgalerie will show how dramatically postwar art was shaped by the tensions that existed between politics and society
