Manaf Halbouni’s solo exhibition Level 3 focuses on his long-term, cross-media project What If. What if the Industrial Revolution had taken place in the Ottoman Empire and the Arabic world instead of in Europe, and the former had overcome Europe in the first half of the 20th century? In What If, Manaf Halbouni turns the course of history on its head in a mix of fiction, historical facts and present-day conflicts. Central themes are global conflicts, colonialism, borders and rootlessness.

until 17.04. Jay Mark Johnson: No Stone unturned photography, Repro CARBON DATING #1, Hazard, Kentucky, 2008, UltraChrome Pigmentdruck auf Aludibond/Plexiglas, 160 x 746 cm

The large-scale photographs by American photographer and director Jay Mark Johnsonachieve something ordinarily impossible for photography: by means of a modified panoramic camera they record continuous movement. In doing so, Johnson breaks with established ways of seeing and creates a new visual language, one that at first may appear enigmatic to the beholder. At the same time he adjusts the parameters of his recording in such a manner that the visual shifts remain rather subtle.

mounir fatmi, born 1970,Tangiers, Morocco – By using materials such as antenna cable, typewriters and VHS tapes, mounir fatmi elaborates an experimental archeology that questions the world and the role of the artist in a society in crisis. He twists its codes and precepts through the prism of a trinity comprising Architecture, Language and Machine. Thus, he questions the limits of memory, language and communication while reflecting upon these obsolescent materials and their uncertain future.

For over a hundred years “Erbgericht” is a county inn in rural Saxony, in a village called Polenz. Andrea Grützner, born 1984 in Pirna, grew up nearby and tells of a big old house, “a collage of material built over generations!”. The images, taken in one analog shot and without any digital alteration of the picture, are studies of rooms and objects. Through the use of color flash and the creation of strong shadow lines, these interiors look alienated and transformed.
