As a place of art, Berlin counts as one of Europe's top addresses. As an art market, however, the German capital has a way to go to catch up. The initiators of the award want to close this gap: Berlin should become a leading art trading venue and galleries are important drivers in achieving this.

The VBKI-Award BERLIN GALLERIES is particularly focused on promoting newcomer galleries, which, with their entrepreneurial commitment, inspire the variety of artistic production in Berlin. The focus of the gallery program on the primary market must be contemporary art, which is so typical of Berlin.

The award is aimed at young (established between three to a maximum of ten years ago), professionally working galleries based in Berlin. These can apply with a special exhibition project for the Berlin Art Week, which takes place in autumn.
